The National AIDS Hotlines distributes publications about HIV and AIDS, including information about prevention and care. Many of the publications are free of charge. To request publications, find out which programs are available in your area, or to just ask general questions about HIV and AIDS, you can confidentially call the hotline number at any time. AIDS is a chronic, life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is a sexually transmitted disease, and can also be transmitted through blood, breast-feeding and childbirth. Once HIV is contracted, it can take years for the virus to weaken your immune system to the point that you have AIDS. HIV/AIDS has no cure, only treatments to slow the progress of the disease.
