The Adoptive Families of America (AFA) is an international voluntary organization dedicated to providing problem solving assistance and information about the challenges of adoption to members of adoptive families and prospective adoptive families. Established in 1967, AFA seeks to create opportunities for successful adoptive placement and to promote the health and welfare of children without permanent families. Consisting of 20,000 members who are parents or adoption professionals and a network of 200 chapters, AFA provides technical and financial assistance to more than 250 adoptive parent support groups nationwide and around the world, offers a member helpline, engages in advocacy and lobbying, hosts a national conference, and provides grants to programs serving children in need of permanent homes across the world. AFA offers a variety of materials including listings of local adoptive parent support groups, "AFA’s Guide to Adoption," a guide discussing the adoption process and providing information on more than 300 adoption agencies worldwide, a bimonthly magazine entitled "Adoptive Families," discussing current adoption news and parenting issues, brochures, reports and a free parenting resource catalog.
