The VATER Connection Support is website founded by two mothers of children with VATER Association, a rare disorder that affects several organ systems of the body. "VATER," an acronym for the characteristic abnormalities associated with the disorder, stands for (V)ertebral defects, abnormalities of certain bones of the spinal column; (A)nal atresia/imperforate anus, absence or abnormal blockage of the anal opening; (T)racheo (E)sophageal defects, the presence of an abnormal connection (fistula) between the esophagus and the windpipe (trachea) and/or other malformations; and (R)enal and/or radial limb defects, malformation of the kidneys and/or abnormalities affecting the thumb side of the arm. In most cases, the disorder occurs randomly for unknown reasons (sporadically); however, some familial cases have been identified. The VATER Connection is dedicated to providing networking opportunities that enable affected families to exchange information, resources, and mutual support.
