The National Gaucher Foundation of Canada is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of research towards the treatment and eventual cure of Gaucher disease, a rare disorder of fat metabolism. In individuals with Gaucher disease, deficiency of the enzyme glucosylceramidase results in abnormal fatty accumulation in storage cells (Gaucher cells) in certain organs of the body, such as the spleen, liver, lymph nodes, and bone marrow. Depending upon the form of the disorder, associated symptoms and findings may become apparent during infancy, childhood or adolescence, or adulthood. The National Gaucher Foundation of Canada was established in 1991 and is committed to preparing and distributing educational brochures; conducting seminars and lectures regarding Gaucher disease for medical personnel, affected individuals, family members, and the general public; and providing support services for individuals with Gaucher disease and their families. In addition, it funds and encourages research, and provides advocacy on behalf of patients and families.
