The Alzheimer Society of Canada (ASC) is a non-profit Canadian health organization that is dedicated to providing a nationwide network of services to help Canadians affected by Alzheimer's disease, a degenerative neurological disease characterized by progressive deterioration of cognitive processes and memory (dementia). Affected individuals experience progressive memory failure; confusion and disorientation; changes in mood, behavior, and personality; speech difficulties; and other symptoms and findings. The Alzheimer Society of Canada was founded in 1978 and has 10 provincial societies across Canada. The society's objectives include alleviating the personal and social consequences of Alzheimer's disease, supporting those who are caring for people with the disease, promoting public understanding and awareness, and funding biomedical, social, and psychological research. The society offers a variety of programs and services including conducting an annual national awareness program, providing care guidelines for caregivers, and running Safely Home TM.
