The Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) is a non-profit, voluntary organization dedicated to the pursuit of education, scientific and research activities leading to treatments for Friedreich's ataxia and the related sporadic ataxias. Friedreich's ataxia is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the loss of muscle strength and coordination (ataxia), heart enlargement (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy), diabetes, scoliosis, slurred speech and impairment of vision and hearing. Established in 1998, the alliance promotes basic and clinical biomedical research into Friedreich's ataxia and the related sporadic ataxias by conducting seminars and conferences for the research community, providing peer-reviewed research grants, and collaborating with other organizations. Program activities include newsletters, brochures, and a website.
