The Beach Center on Families and Disability (BCFD) is a research organization that was established in 1988. The Center’s central theme is family empowerment through programs of research, training, and information dissemination. These goals are achieved by motivating families to take an active role in finding appropriate services; supporting families to obtain the resources and skills that they and their children need; and building a society that responds to the needs of the family and its children. Current research projects include determining the efficacy of one-to-one parent to parent support programs; understanding statewide parent to parent programs; identifying the role of fathers; evaluating program responsiveness to fathers; and helping parents facilitate friendships. Educational materials are produced and distributed by the organization including booklets and brochures on family support issues, abuse and neglect, emotional skills, and emotional health. The University of Kansas, private donations and the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research fund the Beach Center of Families and Disability.
