The Center for Medical Consumers (CMC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing people with the information they need to understand medical conditions and obtain appropriate health care. Established in 1976, the Center for Medical Consumers works in a number of ways to protect people’s medical rights. Its role as a member of the Consumer Consortium put together by the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Consumer Affairs allows the Center to participate in the selection of consumer representatives to serve on all FDA advisory panels that approve new drugs and devices. In addition, the Center was chosen to be one of eight national advocacy groups serving on the FDA Steering Committee that designed a new action plan to provide all consumers with useful written information about their prescription drugs. It has long been an advocate for a universal health insurance system for the United States, and it opposes the growth of profit making in the health care system. The organization maintains a free medical library, which is designed especially for lay readers and produces a newsletter entitled "HealthFacts."
